In CHICKEN BONE MAN, a #graphicnovel in-progress about a blues piano-playing kid named Berl, pictures of Elias and Dora Olschwanger (“Reb Elias” and "Mrs. Olschwanger" in SHLEMIEL CROOKS) appear on the wall. The real-life version of Berl was the grandson of Elias and Dora.
Sofie Helfert, the Czech illustrator of the Newbery Honor book PAPERBOY by @VVawter, recently sent Vince a gift of original drawings. Seeing them prompted me to look back at the book, and I am astounded again by her insight in having captured Vince in the character of Mr. Spiro.
