At Epiphany, Italians are visited by La Befana, the Christmas witch. Like Claus, she arrives via the chimney with gifts. But she also brings coal for the naughty children and may take them back home to her child-guzzling husband. #GothicAdvent

The Turk, or The Automaton Chess Player, took the world by storm. Built by Kempelen in 1769, it could've given Elizabeth Harman a run for her money. It beat Napoleon, Franklin and Catherine Great. Only 50 years later did they realise there was a tiny chess master hiding inside.
