As a child, my favorite artwork in our home was a print of Cornelis Bisschop's "Woman Peeling Apples," 1670. Second favorite was Lawrence's "Pinkie," 1794. The pretty picture of Pinkie hasn't withstood the test of time for me. The beauty of "Woman Peeling Apples" -- timeless.

Should an artist who has to leave America for the respect he deserves still be called an American artist? born in Pittsburgh, PA, spent most of his adult life abroad. Does he need to be exceptionalized by race? No. A spiritual artist. A great artist.
