The exquisite, inimitable, artistic genius Sir Anthony van Dyck was in 1599. Whether painting portraits, religious or mythological subjects, he kicked butt. HARD.

Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio in 1610 at the age of 39. Here are some of his final paintings, The Denial of St Peter , David with the head of Goliath & The Martyrdom of St Ursula , all done in the last year of his life.

The Christian martyr St.Valentine died on this day in 269AD. As well as being the patron saint of affianfed & married couples, he should be prayed to by beekeepers, & sufferers of fainting and epilepsy. Here’s Bassano’s St.Valentine Baptisting St.Lucilla (1510/15)

Joyeux anniversaire Monsieur Courbet! He was 200 years ago and man, did he have a great beard. Here are two of my favourite paintings, La Rencontre (1854) and Un enterrement à Ornans (1549-50)

Loved Edward Burne-Jones today with my glamorous companion . A beautiful exhibition with an astounding range of objects, the photos don’t do it justice but here are some anyway

Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio my all time favourite artist ever died in 1610. He was returning to Rome, recalled from exile by a Papal pardon when he died at Port Ercole at the age of 39. The Martyrdom of St Ursula is thought to be his last painting

‘Meanwhile, the benign ruler of heaven graciously looked down to earth, and saw the worthlessness of what was being done...So he decided to send into the world an artist who would be skilled in each and every craft’ Michelangelo was in 1475, and Vasari nailed his arrival.
