This chromolithograph is take from plate 24 of William Simpson's 'India: Ancient and Modern'. The well was a centre of village life. Women drew water from common wells and carried pitchers on their heads.

A punishment scene from Egypt
This is a relief from the tomb of Menna, high official of Thutmose IV, in the Theban necropolis.

5-Wrap the body with linen bandages and put some amulets between them, then pronounce spells to activate their magical protective powers.
6-Put the mummy in a sarcophagus and lay everything in a tomb.

2-Clean the liver, lungs, intestines and stomach and place them in four special jars (canopes) whose lids represent the gods who guard them. Only the heart will have to be put back into the body, as it is considered the center of intelligence.
