In 1651, Baugin became a member of the French Académie.

Artist Guido Reni's work proved such an influence on him that he was sometimes called, "Le Petit Guide".

July 9, 1563: Italian Baroque painter Orazio Gentileschi is born.

Name sound familiar? It should. Orazio is father to famous female artist Artemisia Gentileschi, whose birthday was yesterday!

From 1626 onward, he was court painter to King Charles I.

Arguably, one of Diego Velázquez's most recognizable works is "Las Meninas" (1656).

But I much prefer his richly coloured and meticulously rendered religious works, like "Coronation of the Virgin" (1644). 🎨

June 6, 1599: Spanish painter Diego Velázquez is baptized.

Diego became the leading artist in the court of King Philip IV. Sadly, the painter rarely signed or dated his works, meaning they are often identified by style.

May 28, 1810: Swiss landscape painter Alexandre Calame is born.

The son of a marble carver, Calame lost sight in one eye as a child. He took painting lessons from Alpine landscape artist François Diday, whose influence is evident in Calame's work.
