Artpedia Gallery is delighted to present Distinct Vernaculars, a group exhibition of works by Amarachi Odimba, Fredrick Idele, Olalekan Adeyemi, Dennis Onofua and Sadiq Williams. Featuring narratives that are peculiar to the artists.
By 1961, when older members of the society were graduating, the group disbanded and in a few years the other members graduated too. They all soon began to function in different capacities as lecturers, industrial designers, graphic artists, and art critics.
The goal of the Zaria Art Society wasn't to completely reject western art and its ideas but to use its techniques to express indigenous concepts and create personalized styles in the process.
In its early days, the Fine Arts department at the College of Arts, Science and Technology, Zaria, had only British lecturers bar Clara Ugbodaga, a Nigerian painter. This, alongside the use of the British curriculum, meant that the students studied European art majorly.
In line with his interest in art, Grillo obtained a diploma in Fine Arts from the Nigeria College of Art, Science, and Technology, Zaria (now Ahmadu Bello University) in 1961.
Test your art knowledge ✨. Can you name the painting and the artist?
