Anne would have been very against this practice, but stuffed birds were a popular decoration in hats. One statistic indicated that 5 million birds were killed yearly to satisfy the demand. This trend soon grew out of fashion as conservationists rallied to protect the birds.
Girl's fashion was inspired by the Aesthetic movement, especially the drawings of Kate Greenaway. The dresses were loose and high-waisted so children could move freely. Smocking (gathering in the form of pleats) was popular as it was associated with innocence. So pretty! 😍
Yesterday, I discovered the very voluminous gigot-style puffed sleeve. So who had the "puffiest" sleeves on Anne with an E? I think it would be Mlle. Chaminade, the pianist at Aunt Jo's party! Although, Jenny and Anne's sleeves were definitely up there! 🙌

Love these advertising trading cards from one of Canada's largest corset manufacturers, Crompton Corset Company. I love how some of them have nothing to do with corsets. My favourite is the one with the die-cut flowers. Which is your favourite?
