if i were ritsuko i wouldve been like 'Queen U keep a whole ass penguin captive in ur house as some sick LARP w ur 2nd impact Antarctica Trauma'
POV: Yr county opened 2 early so U opt for grab n go @ Sbux. Ur masked barista stares at the Mastrena, forgetting to adjust the temp on ur kids soy no WC white hot chocolate w peppermint. U ask U good? A Pause, then: Akagi Ritsuko might be the most compelling grey villain in NGE.
Ultimately, Anno fumbles noncommittally with Lilith+Eve. NGE's women are symptomatic of a patriarchal anxiety about women’s agency. They are equal parts punished and punishers, but are eventually subordinated to Shinji's (failed) actualization. For Eva, Adam wins in the end.
Ritsuko is another Lilith inversion. She sleeps with Gendo (Adam-type), feels jealousy over Gendo’s preference for Rei, and retaliates against Gendo by murdering his Rei clones (read: children).
Asuka, presumed Eve-type, lies underneath as Shinji strangles her. Below is Dante Gabriel Rossetti's 1867 portrait of Lilith, who he imagines as "a self-absorbed [...] beauty who combs her hair and seductively exposes her shoulders" (MET website). Asuka is not Eve.
Lilith appears/reappears in SFF. Below is an ink drawing by French SFF artist Michel Desimon paired with analysis from Michele Osherow’s “Dawn of a New Lilith: Revisionary Mythmaking in Women’s SF."
asuka does make active, repeated efforts to befriend and include rei. asuka explains to misato that rei does not eat meat, so they forego steak for ramen. ultimately though, like asuka's mother, rei rejects her.
epi15, "lies and silence / those women longed for the touch of others' lips, and thus invited their kisses"
