I think the reason why Gaara was so weakened at this point was that he had still not recovered from having half his chakra swiped by Urashiki and then getting battered by Momoshiki shortly afterwards.....

every since the battle with Momoshiki Gaara has been using this like tendril/spiderweb technique with his sand which I find interesting.....like it gives him finer control I guess???
