During the G10 update for Monster Hunter Frontier, a poll was held on Twitter to choose the next Exotic Species. Besides Sand Barioth (ベリオロス亜種), the candidates were Vespoid Queen (クイーンランゴスタ), Stygian Zinogre (ジンオウガ亜種), and Giadrome (ドスギアノス).

Voljang's most striking feature is the firestones located on its arms. Instead of using the thunder element, Voljang uses the fire element as a weapon against threats. Voljang is known as the "Crimson Lotus Lion" due to its ability to manipulate fire with its firestones.

Classified as an "Origin Species" due to its ancient appearance, Voljang is thought to be a close relative of Rajang since both look remarkably similar. It is unknown if Voljang is Rajang's ancestor, but some Rajang can be found in the same volcanic environment as Voljang.
