A lot of cell shading looks really bad, and I think I've at least partly figured it out. 2D puts shadows strategically around the edges of the figure, which accents the main features, and gives depth. Cell shading often cuts halfway across the figure in a really ugly way.

One thing that I really wanna see in the world of cell shaded 3D is something that's very hard to describe.
