First try at animated eyes and mouth

I wanted a much scrappier look.

The beak was turned into a simple hinge with large screws. Large face screen to keep it expressive, while the actual face doesn't contort anymore to retain the robot look. Finally we went over all the shapes and made sure they would read in 3D!

What started out as a few doodles quickly turned into a new design for hoobert.

I was very happy with the low tech look of the body. The head still retained a very organic look however. Also he was painted silver!

Hoobert started out as an owl character. At first we went with a teal highlight colour and shapes close to those of real owls.

We later changed up the colours to those of an eastern screech owl, while making the shapes more cartoony.

Designing a character from scratch is a long process. Here's my birdbot 'Hoobert', who's been in development since 2016.

It started out as an owl. At one point we switched to robotic, and with time I've pushed it more and more towards a scrappy inorganic look.
