A squaddie takes the Roman equivalent of a fag break while doing patrol duty along Hadrian's Wall at Crag Lough in 130 AD.

Still painting to escape the boredom of lockdown, imagining I'm on holiday in beautiful places like the English Lake District.

HAUNTING ON HADRIAN'S WALL. Cawfields Milecastle is reputedly haunted by a young squaddie, Lucius, who took his own life when he discovered he had been betrayed by his girlfriend who had been passing information to her brother so that he could smuggle contraband across the border

Hadrian's Wall at Walltown Crags as it might have looked circa 140 AD

Primus Pilus ('first spear') stands sentinel on Hadrian's Wall circa. 130 AD. My gym has been closed during lockdown and this is my tenth 'muscle' painting by way of compensation. Let's hope I'll be going back to English landscapes soon!

PSYCHING MYSELF for my trek in a fortnight by re-imagining Hadrian's Wall. I won't have a horse to help me - I'll be slogging in the footsteps of the poor bloody squaddies who patrolled the northern frontier of the Roman Empire.

Inspired by the fantasy art of Boris Vallejo, this is the third canvas in a triptych depicting Viking warriors against the backdrop of the Northern Lights. Concentrating on getting fit to walk Hadrian's Wall next month - not that I'll ever look like this guy!!

With gyms in the UK about to re-open, here's my last lockdown painting for a while. Two years ago I travelled to the Arctic Circle in Alaska to see the Nothern Lights - I should have gone to Scotland. This is my take on the Aurora Borealis in Norway at the time of the Vikings,

SIXTH PAINTING OF THE LOCKDOWN. This is the result of my liking of the work of fantasy artist Boris Vallejo, a lifelong fascination with the Vikings and a desire to see the Northern Lights (still on my bucket list despite a trip to the Arctic Circle in Alaska).

MEMORIES OF KEY WEST. The Arts are a wonderful way of escaping the claustrophobia of the lockdown. I'm loving the virtual tours of some of the world's greatest museums and art galleries. My paintings will never hang in them, but that's not why I do them!
