I got the artist and book title right — Jacobus Houbraken’s HEADS OF ILLUSTRIOUS PERSONS OF GREAT BRITAIN — but what threw me was that they were flopped.

What happens to a grisly magazine illustration when returned to the artist?

In 1948 my father painted this scene of a corpse being pulled up by lobstermen for Elks Magazine. But my mom thought it would spook the kids when hanging on the wall, so she asked for changes.
