Rubens, Peter Paul (1577-1640) No other 17th-cent European painter combined artistic talent, social & economic success & a high cultural level. Success in the major European courts & high social standing were as important as artistic talent in making him an influential painter.

A couple of Famous artists who caught the Spanish Flu but survived...Edvard Munch (1863-1944) Norwegian painter, best known work, The Scream (1893). Childhood was overshadowed by illness, bereavement & the dread of inheriting a mental condition that ran in the family.

Egon Schiele(1890-1918) Austrian Expressionist painter. Klimt was a mentor. Work is noted 4 its intensity & sexuality. The twisted body shapes/expressive line mark the artist as an early exponent of Expressionism. Died 3 days after his pregnant wife, both to the Spanish Flu.

Henry Fuseli (1741-1825) Swiss painter/draughtsman /writer on art who spent much of his life in Britain. Many of his works, such as The Nightmare, deal w/supernatural subject matter. His style had a considerable influence on many younger British artists, including William Blake.

Muhammad Ben Ali ar-Ribati (1861-1939) Moroccan painters. Born in Rabat, based in Tangier and supported by European artists. In 1903 became a cook 4 the Irish painter Sir John Lavery, who 1st settled in Morocco in 1890. Lavery noticed that Ribati was a gifted watercolor painter.

Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso (1887-1918) 1 of the 1st gen of Portuguese modernist painters, stands out among all of them 4 the quality of his work & 4 dialogue established w/the historical avant-gardes of the early 20th cent. Died in 1918, aged 30 of the Spanish flu.

Hilma Af Klint (1862 – 1944) While artists such as Piet Mondrian or Wassily Kandinsky r among the most famous & most traded artists, she had long been not known 2 many. Today the Swedish artist is known as 1 of the earliest & most important abstract artists & great women artists.

Edgar Degas(7/19/1834-9/271917)French Impressionist artist famous 4 pastel drawings & oil paintings. Produced bronze sculptures, prints & drawings also. Identified w/subject of dance; more than half of his works depict dancers. One founder of Impressionism but rejected the term.

Wassily Wassilyevich Kandinsky(12/16/1866-12/13/1944)Painter & theorist. Generally credited as 1 of the pioneers of abstraction in western art, possibly after Hilma af Klint. Became insider in the cultural administration and helped establish the Museum of the Culture of Painting.
