Just to show how dry soils are, here's a map showing the soil moisture status across the UK yesterday, and a time series of soil moisture from the COSMOS-UK Rothamsted site where after a wet winter soils have dried steadily to levels typical of July.

Big increases in soil moisture over the last ten days of the month at many sites, and Stoughton in central England providinging a particularly dramatic example.
