Even Death ran out of good ideas every now and then. "How can I scare the crap out of these humans? I know -- an auction WITH A HIGH STARTING BID!!!"
From "Strange Fantasy" #2 (Farrell), 1952.
Unusually evocative opening panel from "Nightmare" #3. I like the title too.
I love this opening panel from "Nightmare" #2 for two reasons: the chracter's name (Robert Strangeway) and his freakin' awesome mid-century modern bachelor pad with a sword on the wall and A POOL IN THE LIVING ROOM. This man lived a full life. RIP Robert Strangeway.
Pre-code horror splash page checklist:
Killer plant? Check.
Random floating skull? Check.
Even more random blue-faced demon? Check.
Hot chick who's too busy being hot to help save her boyfriend? Check.
(From "Dark Mysteries" #7)
How the universe tells you it's time to get a new doctor (from "Dark Mysteries" #7)
Some interior art from "Chamber of Chills." Even the table of contents page was cool!
"Adventures Into Darkness" combined traditional pre-code horror motifs (creatures, demons, etc.) with psychological horror that, even today, evokes real discomfort in the reader (or at least me, maybe I'm just a wimp). They were going for the jugular. From #6 (1952)...
A tribute to ACG's mysterious redheaded cover girl -- blondes and brunettes were terrorized too, but no one had to deal with more supernatural menace on the covers of "Adventures Into the Unknown" than this young lady!
Today in "This is Pre-Code Horror," it's Splash Page Saturday! Four great opening panels that define the essence of pre-code horror (in your Captain's humble opinion of course!)
Today in "This is Pre-Code Horror," four random panels that define the genre! Zombies! Masked spectres! Romantic corpses! Demonic peer pressure!
