Most of my exposure to Fire Emblem is Smash Bros and a few folks that post about the mobile game a lot.
One thing I've noticed every time I see the NES era characters side-by-side with modern designs is that I almost universally like the old ones better. 'Less is more' and such.
I should replay Zack and Wiki sometime. I got all the way to the final level when it first came out but never got around to finishing it. I remember it having so much lively charm and the cartoony visual style was lovely.
