step 17.
I do the trees and grass
I don't worry too much about it looking weird as I'm going to blur them to add depth anyway

step 16, working front to back starting with gradient in the sky and fluffin up the clouds
sponge brush is my friend lol

step 15. this is the hard part, things that interact with the characters.
I add transparency where needed (grass) on a transparency layer and add shadows to make the characters really blend into the environment

step 14.
I do the blocking for the painting

13. ambient scene lighting
it helps me set the mood for the BG painting when I do it, though I usually change it later
