I’m hoping to finish froggyfall prompts in Nov (grad school hit me hard towards the end of Oct), but in the meantime please enjoy these chaotic initial sketch/final comparisons.

Day 23 of - Apple / Red-eyed tree frog (Agalychnis callidryas)

Despite being colorful, the red-eyed tree frog is not poisonous. By tucking in their legs and closing their eyes, these frogs can hide the colorful parts of their bodies to blend in with foliage.

Day 20 of - Wand / Australian green tree frog (Ranoidea caerulea)

These frogs’ skin secretions help fend off mold and bacteria. Despite being green, they were originally known as the “blue frog” due to improper preservation of research specimens.

Day 19 of - Poison / Mimic poison frog (Ranitomeya imitator)

While only mildly poisonous, mimic poison frogs use their coloration mimic other, more poisonous frogs in order help to keep predators away.

Day 17 of - Witch's home / Cranwell's horned frog (Ceratophrys cranwelli)

These voracious, large-mouthed frogs are capable of devouring prey half as large as they are. They also sleep with their eyelids open.

Day 16 of - Plant shelf / American bullfrog (Lithobates catesbeianus)

Thanks to elastic force stored in its tongue, American bullfrog can launch its tongue at prey and retrieve it in less than a tenth of a second—much faster than if it were to use muscle force alone!

Day 13 of - Tea / Amazon milk frog (Trachycephalus resinifictrix)

The Amazon milk frog gets its name from the poisonous, milky fluid it secretes from its back when it is stressed. These frogs have specialized toe pads that can hold up to 14x their own body weight!

Day 11 of - Candle / Golden mantella (Mantella aurantiaca)

The golden mantella is one of Madagascar’s most threatened amphibians. These frogs lay their eggs on moist leaf litter, and subsequent rainfall washes the tadpoles into nearby pools of water.

Day 10 of - Hanging ivy / Red-backed poison frog (Ranitomeya reticulata)

The red-backed poison frog is found in the Amazon rainforest and is the second-most poisonous frog in the genus Ranitomeya. Despite being less than 2 cm long, it can do serious damage to humans!
