In this 'Noli Me Tangere' ('Can't Touch This') of 1526-28, Hans Holbein has - against a beautifully realised landscape - masterfully captured the moment in which Christ expertly dodges Mary Magdalene's chop and enters a fighting stance to deliver a devastating counter attack
I was rummaging in some old files to find some notes and I found this picture I made sometime last year, adapted from the verso Psalter Map. It shows that a key priority of medieval cartography was indicating that Christ in fact had legs for days
Possibly my new favourite manuscript! @BLMedieval Add MS 24189 (c.1410, Bohemia), a text-free series of full-page miniatures depicting scenes from the Book of John Mandeville. The work is grisaille, with colour really effectively applied for dramatic effect.
