5/5/81: DOCTOR STRANGE #48 begins what would be a mere six-issue collaboration between Roger Stern & Marshall Rogers, but it would be a high point of the decade. Interesting going back to see how Stern & inker Terry Austin hold it together despite a number of artist changes.

Writer Paul S. Newman was born OTD in 1924. Dubbed by Guinness as the "most prolific comic book writer" (4100 stories!), he would produce horror tales for pre-Marvel Stan Lee, but it was Dell/Gold Key where he co-created Doctor Solar and wrote TUROK for 26 years. He died in 1999.

For his birthday, merely two of the classic creatures Dick Ayers would ink over Kirby's pencils. Ayers would later draw the short-lived "It, the Living Colossus" series in ASTONISHING TALES.

4/28/81: The road to redemption for the Gladiator continues in DAREDEVIL #173. The "Lady Killer" of the title bears a striking resemblance to the erstwhile villain, and Matt Murdock goes on the trail of the real criminal. A break in the Elektra storyline to catch our breath.

I've decided to salute the birthdays of classic SF and horror writers here. They influenced the comic creators that I reference in my tweets, and they deserve to be read and remembered.

For my money Gil Kane doesn't get enough props as a first-rate horror artist. He came very close to drawing for Warren's books but they couldn't reach an agreement on providing a studio.
