Not having Kid means you won't be able to steal anything from enemies from the start. You will only get to meet other character of thief class later in the story.

Like if you want Kid in your party, you must not recruit another female character before leaving the first town. And the next opportunity to recruit her, you have to sacrifice recruiting Glenn (who you can do combo with the protagonist).
