The issue opens in the aftermath of Hank's torture–errr I mean treatment–at Dr. Maddicks' hands; the scientist breaking down over what appears to have been his experiment's failure.

Layton seems interested in writing Maddicks as sympathetic, misled by his "good" intentions...

...are unrelated to the original X-Men remains a mystery, but their combined might–and some extra strength rage-addled optic blasts from Scott–knock Tower over and leave him open to interrogation.

...and the team has instead been unleashed against Hank's captor-for-hire Tower as a means to unknowingly tie up loose strings for Dr. Maddicks.

How no one realizes that the man with optic blasts, the man with a body made of ice, the man with the wings or the redhead in green...

X-Factor is summoned, and in a moment that is probably not as meta as it comes across as being, Jean wonders if their VERY OBVIOUS identities as the Original X-Men might have been uncovered.

Shockingly, that somehow isn't the case...

Back at XF HQ, Scott finally resolves himself to reaching out to Madelyne to finally share with her what's happened, but an unconnected phone line leaves Scott to assume he's been fully rejected, rather than that any danger might have befallen his wife and son.

Hank barely has time to process this unrecognizable woman before a size-changing mutant, Tower, breaks into Vera's apartment to attack and capture Hank.
