this is a cute and humorous 4 episode OVA from 1994. It's not the farthest thing to say this was a more wholesome 90's version of something like KonoSuba, though this starts out in the fantasy world and uses old school RPG mechanics and motifs for humor

as i searched for cover images for mahoromatic I realized that this is one of those series that attracted a lot of fan-made wallpapers and the aesthetic sensibilities fit perfectly in retrospect

in my ongoing quest to watch every Gainax anime, I found a lot of similarities between this and This Ugly Yet Beautiful World. cute slice of life with dark undertones that come out and get surprisingly intense at the end. what can i say, it was great

damn its just like evangelion!! jk but I think this was on my hard drive because I wanted to watch everything by gainax. it's not mindblowing but just well executed. the concept was interesting but the show didn't really go for it hard enough
