Happy World Wildlife Day - a day late…. Some fun groundwater wildlife to celebrate "World Wildlife Day"... anyone who follows my posts probably knows I confuse world wildlife day with every day of the year...
Orangeback Flying Squid (Sthenoteuthis pteropus) jump out of the water and glide for considerable distances, like flying fishes. A characteristic pose is taken when gliding: fins are outstretched, arms are organized into one plane, w a "flattened" body pattern.
The Hammerjaw (Omosudis lowii) is a deep water predator. One characteristic that allows them to tackle large prey items is an expandable stomach. They can eat things slightly larger than they are!
Living art No.2: These are the ventral photophore arangements of the the Lovely Hatchetfish or the Atlantic Silver Hatchetfish (Argyropelecus aculeatus).
What are you thankful for today? I'm thankful for groundwater biodiversity.
Developmental stages of a deep sea monster.... Melanocetus johnsoni, Gulf of Mexico, part of the DEEPEND project.
A "snaggletooth" (Astronesthes micropogon) trawled from between 600m and 400m depth, Gulf of Mexico, July 2018.
Happy World Oceans Day!! Larval flatfish photographed on the Gulf of Mexico during a DEEPEND research trip.
