The general location, respective battle strategies, miraculous rifle shot, killing/injuring of the Chief & subsequent retreat, etc, all seem to come from Adobe Walls. Everything but the Adobe Walls. Even Riker's trading post seems to be inspired by the Adobe Walls shops/saloons:

@eoinmonkey You can see the rolled-up yellow slickers on the saddles of these cowboys in the Charlie Russell paintings I previously posted. They also came in black, but it often scared the horses, so yellow was more popular.
