*Starts playing Love Nikki*
Expects: Lighthearted dress-up game with teenage soap opera story lines.
Gets: War of the Kingdoms OMFG DID YOU JUST MURDER HER?!
BONUS FACT: In 1889, Fusajiro Yamauchi founded Nintendo Koppai for the purposes of producing and selling hand-crafted hanafuda. Though it took a while to catch on, soon the Yakuza began using hanafuda in their gambling parlors, and card games became popular in Japan again.
You could say Yugi blossomed over the course of the series and through the Friendship Squad's many adventures.
This brings us back to hanafuda, flower cards--playing cards for card games.
Mutou 武藤 Warrior Westeria (popular translation)
Yugi 遊戯 Game
You get the idea.
Most Wisteria are purple, Yugi's eyes are purple. Purple is the color of nobility and commoners used to be forbidden to wear it. You may also know that purple eyes in anime often means someone is descended from/reincarnation of, or is like a god/angel/king. (Right back to Yami.)
Yugi's always in blue, ain't he? But that's not all! Wisteria vines are able to improve the soil around them, much like Yugi helped the people he met become better versions of themselves.
Especially the guy possessing his body, because DAYUM.
In Japan, wisteria represent long-life and immortality. Sound familiar?
Wisteria bloom in spring/early summer, Yugi's a June baby. In terms of births, it symbolizes new life. (Yup, still following that theme.) And, blue wisteria represent auspicious beginnings to new ventures.
For the hell of it I decided to translate #yugioh Yugi Mutou's family name.
武 mu: military/martial
藤 tou: wisteria
This likely refers to the Japanese Wisteria suit in hanafuda decks.
