Pokestar Studios had battle sprites that weren't usable pokemon
When shooting a film some were in the form of props, but when the movie was complete you were able to see their full sprite glory.
The sprites are also references to some films, like mecha godzilla and robo cop.
Like most aspects of Gen V, N was GameFreak's attempt at trying something new by making a character have a lot of depth and be the core root of the story rather than having a legendary fill that role. Without him we'd never have complex characters like AZ or Lillie.
There's a story in you can read in the trainer school in usum that tells a story of Pyukumuku, Slowpoke, and Pikachu on an island challenge. These same three pokemon can be found in Pikachu Valley and, more importantly, in Lusamine's hidden room
