i’d argue defense form rapidly shifts large quantities of keratinized cells to the surface—bizarre alien biology ftw
although my logic would suggest speed form would be the most fragile, but it’s actually optimized to reduce drag.

speculation time! i imagine deoxys has two distinct layers—the red-orange part is the outer layer which provides protection at the expense of sleekness. this is made obvious by the shift to defense form where the abdomen is covered and is built bulkier; the black parts disappear.
