Traditionally the day is spent with family & friends. Beef,chicken, goat or lamb stews are the festive food served (not pork, it is prohibited in Ethiopian Christianity)
3 birds from paradise took St. Yared to heaven & there he heard songs of the 24 Elders. In the 6th c. Yared invented a #musical notation system representing pitch/melody still used in the #Ethiopian church. He named his complex melodic layers after the birds Ge'ez, Izil & Araray.
The cross has been a central part & an insignia of the #Ethiopian church, since the 4th c. All priests/monks own a hand #cross, a symbol of allegiance to Christ. They are made from wood, copper or bronze decorated with a geometry pattern. @metmuseum @BLAsia_Africa @walters_museum
