BOTD - 08/06/1829 - John Everett Millais - CD criticised 'Christ in the House of His Parents' (1850) - "a hideous wry-necked, blubbering, red-headed boy, in a bed-gown" - despite which the two became friends - Millais drawing 'CD on his Deathbed' (1870).

Died OTD 31/05/1837 - pantomime clown Joseph Grimaldi. CD edited 'Memoirs of Grimaldi' for Bentley. "I had not arrived at man's estate when Grimaldi left the stage, and that my recollections of his acting are - to my loss - but shadowy and imperfect." Letter March 1838

OTD-12/5/1820 Florence Nightingale was born. CD and Miss Burdett Coutts acquired a machine for drying the clothes of troops at Scutari hospital.
