in 1841, Dickens finishes the 38th number (chapters 69-70) of The Old Curiosity Shop. He writes, "I am slowly murdering that poor child. It wrings my heart. Yet it must be."

in 1842, Dickens commissions W. P. Frith to paint Dolly Varden and Kate Nickleby; Frith did several different paintings of Dolly over the years. The painting of Kate went missing for nearly a century after Dickens's death, disappearing into a private collection.

in 1840, Dickens finishes the 35th number of The Old Curiosity Shop. He writes to his friend John Forster that "the difficulty has been tremendous — the anguish unspeakable".
