Napoleon believed (incorrectly) that D'Enghien was part of a royalist conspiracy to overthrow him. The murder sent shock waves through Europe's aristocracy and became a rallying cry to oppose Bonaparte (as seen in these prints that emphasise the duke's muder/martyrdom.
