#18 Elizabeth Bathory
The scourge of Halloween everywhere, and the inspiration for the first vampire genre fiction: Carmilla. Like Gilles, many believe she was a victim of political conspiracy, with many of the witnesses testifying that they had heard about it from others.
#15 Euryale
There is very little known about Euryale, a possible indication that she and her sister Stheno were added to the pantheon at a later date. Traditionally, Euryale was known for her earth-shattering wails.
#14 Atalante
There are actually two versions of Atalante in myth, one known for her role in the Calydonian boar hunt and the other her foot race to determine her husband. She and her husband Hippomenes were later turned into lions for doing the nasty in a sanctuary for the gods.
#12 Gilgamesh
He is 2/3 god and 1/3 man. Before you hurt your brain wondering how that works, it was believed in Mesopotamia that any man who was involved with the mother contributed to the baby-making process, so mom slept with two different gods. Get it, Gilmom!!
#11 EMIYA
There is not much I can say without getting into spoilers, but when the FSN demo was released, Nasu was afraid fans would figure out his identity then and there due to the conversation Rin & Shirou have on the phone. Whether or not anyone did is unknown to this day.
#10 Chevalier d’Eon
The real-life inspiration for Lady Oscar. In life, d’Eon was a talented knight and spy, naturally inclined to disguise thanks to their androgynous appearance. Unfortunately, they ended up dying in poverty due to the collapse of the French royal family.
#8 Altera/Attila the Hun
There’s a lot to say about TM’s choices for Attila, but most interesting is the choice to associate her with the “White Giant” cave painting found in Tassili n'Ajjer, Africa where it is generally interpreted as a shaman or ritual figure.
#7 Julius Caesar
Famed for his military exploits, talented writings and assassination, Caesar truly did it all. His conquest of Gaul is well-documented… but only by him. Details are scant, but it’s certain he was a war criminal. Thankfully he’s chilled out a bit in Chaldea.
#6 Siegfried
The poster boy for Fate/Apocrypha. He was originally part of the original concept of the Fate/Apo game, which was later retooled into FGO.
An interesting case in that he can not be easily attributed to an existing historical figure and may be entirely mythical.
#4 Artoria Pendragon Lily
She originally appeared in the Fate/Unlimited Codes fighting game as the younger version of Artoria. She wields Caliburn, not Excalibur.
One alternative interpretation of this form is the corrupted form of Artoria by Medea, courtesy of Gen Urobuchi.
