You can also avoid needing to do in some cases with certain construction methods. For instance, if I know a character has a full beard, I draw the face and the beard around it as two separate overlapping shapes.
When you have objects clipping into each other, the vector renderers aren't smart enough to understand where the overlaps are and clip cleanly, resulting in artifacts on the border. To solve this you have to expand the shapes, divide them and remove shared borders.
