Sgt. Wm. H. Carney of 54th Mass. performed w/ valor at Ft. Wagner in Jul. 1863. #OnThisDay in 1900, he received the Medal of Honor. He is considered first African American MOH recipient. He was born enslaved in VA in 1840; escaped to Mass. and joined the famous ("Glory") 54th.
