(9/?) I'd also not have pre-show Gary act like show Gary. He'd have a lone wolf, slick criminal act, to show how his time in solitary truly affected him, and make his loneliness-induced insanity and desperation for companionship to a sort of "careful what you wish for" situation.
(8/?) likewise, showing in the first ep how they ACTUALLY met spoils what could have been a small nugget of mystery. Because, we're not really sure WHAT happened, but ONE of them must be mistaken.
As it is, there's no question Quinn was never gonna call him back.
(7/?) i think this would add some intrigue and ambiguity, cause we know we're MEANT to root for the protagonist, but we're not really sure that we SHOULD? he SEEMS goofy and harmless but he IS in jail, he could be dangerous, so we can never get QUITE comfortable with him
(4/?) from there it goes the same. Gary seems insistent that they were an item, Quinn has no idea who he is. But now we the audience isn't sure what's going on either, what has or hasn't happened between them, what their connection is supposed to be.
(3/?) We still see the scenes of Quinn doing her thing Earthside but she's ONLY referred to as "Captain Ergon" so we don't know he's trying to reach HER (though it wouldn't be a huge shock.)
It's only confirmed to us at the same time Gary says "oh crap-it's Quinn"

Gary's character development from being overbearing and refusing to take no for an answer in S1, to prioritizing Quinn's comfort despite his own wants in S3
