From 25 February to 14 May 2023, the Fondation Custodia presents the exhibition "Cabinet of Dutch Drawings. The 18th Century. Collection of the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium". Some eighty gems – genre scenes, landscapes, seascapes, still lifes – will be on display.

From 25 February to 14 May 2023, the Fondation Custodia presents the exhibition "Process. Design Drawings from the 1500–1900". The exhibition offers a new insight into the functions of drawing and its central role in the process of creating a work of art.

These sheets representing the four elements were probably made by Gerard van Honthorst (1592–1656) as preliminary studies for ceiling paintings or room decorations. One can instantly imagine the powerful, illusionistic effect of the floating figures when seen from a distance.

The sitters in these paintings, Lambert Schatter and Eva van Beresteyn, married in 1662. Jan de Braij had the remarkable ability to characterise the people in front of his easel – Lambert seems rather at ease, more so than his young bride, who appears withdrawn, not to say shy.

In this view of the Seine (c. 1850), Jongkind was mostly interested in the activities on the bank, as can be seen from the crane that features prominently. The Palais d’Orsay is shown on the right and at the other side of the river we find the Louvre and the Palais des Tuileries.

The men in this niche drawn by Bernardo Campi were at first identified as philosophers, but more recently have been considered to be prisoners.

For this preparatory drawing, 'A Young Man Playing the Viola da Gamba' , Orazio Samacchini probably hired a professional musician to pose for him in his workshop.
