Rather than the Northeast Corridor, a better comparison would probably be the Great Lakes/Midwest region, through growth is comparatively pale.
There are a lot of reasons to move to Chicago; relatively-low poverty, high median income, high education, and high affordability, particularly for a world-class city of its size and importance.
Other American cities, by comparison:
Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco and Oakland, and Miami. These cities all do pretty well with density, but could all benefit substantially from upzoning.
