Hortense is a female Spotted Owl from Ambala. Because of an exposure to flecks, she is the size of an owlet, and is immune to being moonblinked, which helped her infiltrate St. Aegolius and save snatched eggs. She later named herself Mist because of her faded feathers.

In the movie, Metal Beak is a Greater Sooty Owl !

This species was chosen for its large dark eyes and spotted markings. Ravens were also used as references, especially for his thick feathered "mane".
