The GBA Pokemon games are a great example of this I feel. This first one is normal without a filter, the other one is with the filter. Zigzagoon kind of looks like a mess of pixels in the first image but in the 2nd she looks kind of like the official art.

I just came to this really awkward realization that Final Fantasy 1's first box art has a character that LOOKS REALLY SIMILAR to the main character of Dragon Quest 1 and I can't tell if thats intentional or not.
