Limiting this to characters with a voice/arc in the story rather than player-made or mute stand-in.

I found all of Shovel Knights protagonists were great. Complex desires and narratives driven by various aspects of love, as a knights tale should be.

Excluding multiplayer games and the fact that most games I own I've beaten more than five times. I'll post some favorites.
