Vortigern's tower would not stand, said the boy Merlin, because beneath it fought two dragons, a red and a white dragon. Vortigern laughed him off but in a storm the two dragons emerged, then fought: the red won, and the red was Uther Pendragon's symbol.

Going back to Europe as I close, the Norse are rife with amazing goddesses. Frigga, Freyja, Hela, Idinn, Sif, and for me Skadi most of all. The gods treated with her rather than fight her, for fear of winter. And she found love, albeit tragic love!

Among American religions derived of Africa, Oshun has long been a favorite of mine for her power and agency. Recently given my love of all things death, Maman Brigitte, who is very much Irish Brigid, is amazing for her compassion and dirty mouth.

I am less fluent in Chinese myth than I should be but Chang'e, the Lady of the Moon, and Bai Suzhen, Lady White Snake, are two of my favorites. Both suffer great tragedies, though Bai Suzhen manages to make the best of it.

In Wales I adore Rhiannon and Cerridwen. Rhiannon is a Princess of Annwyn, the Otherworld, and is unapologetic in her boldness and truth. Cerridwen is the White Witch, who loves her son and would do anything to help with her Cauldron of Inspiration.

Caught by Loki, the Dwarf Andvari cursed his hoard of gold rather than part with it: any who possessed it, and his gold-gathering ring, would be destroyed by their own avarice. The Dwaef Fafnir even turned into a dragon from the curse!

Sail ye the Seven Seas? It's easier than you'd think: the term refers not to seas but the seven "oceans" according 19th century sailors: the North & South Atlantic, the North & South Pacific, the Indian, the Arctic and Southern oceans.

Tir na nOg is the Irish Otherworld, ruled over by a number of Lords and Ladies, Manannan mac Lir above them all. It means Land of Youth and is one of many names: it is the Land of Women, the Land of Promise, the Plains of Delight, and Isle of Apples

Though her husband Ægir was the embodiment of the sea and Njord was the god of the sea, Ran was the goddess of the sea's unpredictability, keeping the souls of dead sailors for herself. Her daughters made up the waves; her nets were wide.
