Cuckoo and Wryneck, Thomas Pennant, British Zoology, Pl. XXXVI. Folk names have linked Jynx torquilla with Cuculus canorus. In English, Cuckoo’s mate, maid, knave, footman, messenger etc may have come about because the spring arrival of the two birds were similar. Other ideas?
