I dig through VHS tapes to find TV commercials from the '80s, '90s and early 2000s. All encodes are my own. Tweets by @dinosaurdracula.

X-Men: The Animated Series season premiere promo, from 1996. (Episode synopsis, from Wikipedia: "The X-Men are attacked by the Phalanx, a race of techno-organic aliens seeking to assimilate life on Earth. Warlock allies with Beast, Forge & Mr. Sinister to defeat the Phalanx.")

39 181

The Shadow action figures, from 1994. (I know zilch about The Shadow, but I see a buff ninja with glowing red eyes in this commercial, so now I wanna know *everything*.)

27 178

Mortal Kombat Handheld Game, from 1994. (These Tiger Electronics games were low-fi even in their time, but a crude Mortal Kombat was still Mortal Kombat.)

74 356

G.I. Joe Extreme, from 1996. (In this iteration, the main villain was Iron Klaw, who looked like Emperor Zurg mixed with M. Bison.)

20 107

Freddy's Nightmares promo, from 1989. (It aired at midnight in this market, which was a perfect fit even if it was mostly bc of the show's limited stroke. I've posted other promos from this series; search my tweets for more!)

24 162

New Jersey's Action Park, from 1986. (This famously dangerous amusement park is gone but never forgotten. Look up its Wikipedia entry, it reads like someone vandalized it.)

53 266

Teen Party Hotline, from 1988. (Pretty bizarre. To illustrate that the hotline was a way for lonely teens to connect with each other, they showed someone dialing the number FROM THE MOON. To be clear, the hotline had absolutely nothing to do with outer space.)

14 79

Marvel's G.I. Joe comic book, from 1988. (This spot gave "gold head" Destro a royal introduction and immediately made him the coolest bad guy in the entire Joe universe. Not an easy feat!)

56 260

Gremlins 2 TV spot, from 1990. (I cannot overstate what a big deal it was when this started airing. It's not like I was clued into Hollywood's plans at the time, and I was still obsessed with the original film even six years later. This felt like a gift from above.)

33 210

Franken Berry, from 1986. (Back then, the Monster Cereals were available all year and weren't just a Halloween thing.)
