Even Sonic 1 had a story. They had a plan that included cutscenes in the game which were scrapped only due to constraints. So for the original games, they told some of the story in the next best place they could: the instruction manuals.
@matteoboarino @TechBlade9000 @PixelProspector It was not upscaled, it was redrawn, based more on the US box art and Andy's interpretation since the original implied pattern is geometrically impossible. The shape is not a swastika.

Here's a concept sketch of Pocky vs the finished model. I sought to update the design to more closely follow suite with the late 90s anime/Saturn era and make it more low poly friendly.
@FolksyWig @goat_tanji It was mentioned on Twitter and SFGHQ. Folksy's model takes after very early Sonic art while ours takes after Yuji Uekawa's Saturn era art.
