Two pics of my dad i made c.1984, from memory, shortly after he died; l. mono-print, r. oil paint on paper
I drew this early on at art school, from a plaster cast of a Greek sculpture: The Calf Bearer (original c.570 BC). This was Birmingham School of Art, 1984; it was dotted with dusty plaster casts which I probably didn't notice enough. I did and do almost quite like my drawing.
Clouds, 35mm slide, i took c.1995; Clouds, oil on board, i painted c.2008

I painted these three pictures in 1982, shortly after leaving the army. Soon after I left, my unit was deployed on the Falklands conflict. I felt bereft at the time. The paintings have always spoken to me, by way of a pre-tutored freedom, of those ultimate solitudes.
