I leave eyes/ears, clothing etc for the paint stage. It's a long process as the images are quite large (16000x11200px - they are meant to be printable at large scales).
For this stage I use a combo of realistic and totally non-realistic techniques, here are some progress pics :
Here is the camera view in 'render' mode, showing the complete lack of texturing in my 3D models (another thing intentionally wrong) and the HDRI lighting to give a sense of realism to the distorted, untextured shape of the central figure :
I will make a short process thread on this work, starting with the original 3D model - this began as a metaball arrangement in @Blender to get the approximate lump of 'clay' to begin sculpting :
